PHP MiniConf Scedule Released

The OSDC PHP Mini Conference has been released.

http://phpcamp.net.au/schedule

I am pretty happy with the talks as I feel it covers a good range of PHP in a short time frame. Feel the mini conference is coming together quite nicely and hopefully will provide the community with a networking opportunity and interesting information.

I decided to open the last twenty minutes for lighting talks. Hopefully will get some people to jump up and give a talk, would be good to have a case study or two. Read more »

Seems Android is "attracting" Women

Was not happy with this article today, http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/nokia-playing-to-win-with-fir... mainly the comment,

"Telsyte was seeing “all sorts” of people buying Android devices or saying that they wanted to buy Android devices, Mr Fadaghi said. “They're not just nerdy males. We're seeing a lot more females attracted to Android for the fact that [Android] devices have a lot of different looks and form factors. [They're] a little bit more personalised than just the standard iPhone.”

Ok so the reasons I was not happy? Read more »

Your Data and Jurisdiction

For myself I have always hosted in the location of the head quarters for a company, for example an Australian Company requires Australian hosting, an international Company that has offices overseas but a head office in Australia would also require Australian hosting. Another example would be an Australian government they definetly should never be hosted outside of Australian soil...

If the company is based in UK then UK hosting, American then American hosting... Read more »

Hello Drupal

So last night was the first meet-up we had for Learning Drupal Sydney, at Demonz Media in Surry Hills, NSW, Australia http://www.meetup.com/Learning-Drupal-Sydney/events/29076311/

Demonz Media were also kind enough to donate some beers and pizza on top of the training space. Which was great as it took a load of my plate. Read more »

Lesons learnt from "That Request"

My final response to the Beauty and the Geek email saga as I am labeling it. I will be attending future Geek Girl events and will continue to support it however I also think that lessons need to be learnt as we all learn lessons in life to make us better people.

I believe the main issue’s here fall under two categories;

1. the use of the word “reward” as pointed out by Amaya aka “prize”
2. The misleading first email that disclosed nothing of the nature of the request as pointed out by Michelle

The lessons learnt from this also fall into two categories I feel Read more »

Beauty, the Geek and "that" request

I recently received a request through Geek Girls asking if I wanted to take part in a Geek Girl event on TV. Little known to be it was for the Beauty and the Geek show in Australia (http://au.tv.yahoo.com/beauty-and-the-geek-australia/), a show which I feels increases the negative stereotype of both male and female geeks. I have included below my comment and feelings that I posted on http://www.girlgeeksydney.com Read more »

Refunds oh the joy of them

The problem with being un-well at the moment is proving to be the lack of support for refunds. I will be contacting companies tonight and expecting to have my DrupalCon tickets and training refunded however the airlines could be a pain. I would understand on normal circumstances not being able to refund or credit however for a unforseen medical condition I would not expect that to be treated the same as a normal flight cancellation or move. Divine Intervention - aka Pulp Fiction

As most of you know I have not been feeling the best over the last couple of months, coughing fits and not being as active as I normally am. I have also been pushing myself to the limits trying to get a number of large Drupal projects off the ground this year and doing a lot of face to face training and knowledge sharing. Sometimes you load your plate up so much you forget about the person who ios holding it (you). Read more »

Linux Australia Conference Support

Recently I had an idea to start an Australian based PHP Conference. As all good ventures need a team I asked the assistance of Daniel Smith and Graham Weldon who had also expressed a desire to see an Australian PHP Conference. So together the idea and group was born. There are some pie in the sky ideas we have about what a conference can mean and also do for the local PHP community. However everything needs to start from small things. Graham looked into using al business structure but the reality of creating a new business venture and also a conference in 8months was daunting. Read more »

Being Wrong

I was browsing on Ted tonight and came across the below, I think it is very fitting for information technology professionals. We need to be able to admit we are wrong. We need to be able to learn from our peers and contribute. Everything needs a champion however a true Champion admits that they are wrong sometimes and takes on the input of others.

Kathryn says;

"When we come across someone who disagrees with us we assume the following things;
1. They are ignorant
2. They dont know what we know
3. They know the truth and are distorting it for their own benefits Read more »
