School of PHP

Recently Nick Hodge (Open Source Evangelist) from Microsoft asked me if I would like to do an introduction for the new School of PHP that Microsoft was launching. The School of PHP is a very cool idea and I could not say no to something that could get more people into PHP development.

Navigation Research

Currently undertaking an Information Technology Degree in Honours by Research with Southern Cross University. The chosen area of study is Web Site Navigation looking specifically at how distraction on a website can effect a persons uptake of information. During the months of August/September/October i ran an online game experiment on www.websitenavigation.org the data from the experiment has been analysed an a thesis and industry paper is being prepared. Qualifications

Education through both formal study and work experience are the cornerstone to adult life. My focus over the last ten years has been to gain both academic and work experience in the areas of Business and Information Technology, focusing on the implementation of technology based solutions for people. Through knowledge acquired by academic studies, experience as a technology consumer, working as a business professional and technologist I am able to draw upon a wealth of skills when analysing and developing web based solutions. Industry Exposure

Having training in both the principles of design and programming, I enjoy combining the roles of both designer and developer when analysing web solutions. When developing a web site from my experience most time is spent mapping web and business requirements to front end interface elements that drive back end functionality specifications.

Government

Exposure working with both the NSW State Government and Australian Federal Government on large scale Information Technology projects. Read more »

Lullabot Advanced Module Workshop

I was pleased to be around in London at the time that Lullabot was there doing training. This was excellent as in Australia you do not really have exposure to deeper Drupal training I could not miss the opportunity.

The event was lovely, breakfast and lunch was fantastic and other facilities apart from the internet worked well. The internet well was not to bad but the last day of the course it seemed to not work well for us which hampered being able to run tests as due to my travel I was working on the cloud.

Learning Drupal London with Lullabot

During the Lullabot Advanced Module Development training the "Learning Drupal" meet-up group held a special meet-up at the place where we were training. There was a limited amount of places and was basically a sit down and talk Drupal with lullabot.

The night went well, there was lots of questions and everyone was in engaged with the content. @webchick got people to talk about there experiences with drupal and about a subject they were interested in. The Lullabot team then added some back-up information and other people in the room with experiene in that area joined in. Read more »

OLPC Australia

So to cut a long story short OLPC Australia project has gone through various formations. Its current formation is to assist 400,000 XO's across Australia in five years specifically in rural and remote areas. Please see http://www.laptop.org.au/vision/overview

I started doing work on this project with Pia and Jeff Waugh on OLPC Friends in 2008. So it was a pleasure for me to take on a role of Project Management and Development for the web solutions used by OPLC Australia. Read more »

The day started with a keynote from Sarah Vaughun about what her experience was like in high school university and that first job and how she ended up in a top role in IT. Open Education Workshop 2008

On November 21 there was the Australian Learning and Teaching Council, Conference, Education held at Macquarie University. As normal i rocked up late, not to late but missed the morning introductions. Enjoyed the morning talk on LAMS and its use for facilitating open education. There was also a discussion from DET about how they are trying to use open software to facilitate teacher collaboration. There was opposition present from TAFE teachers who believe management are not getting it down to the teachers. i.e not effectively filtering this technology down.. Read more »
